hmm Quantum Device

hmm is a mysterious rounded box thing. when clicked, it turns into a shiny, floating mysterious box thing.

every so often, it talks.

it says something random on it's own or when clicked. This randomness is a curated table with a few thousand lines of random things from Rez's head.

that's about it.

Marketplace: hmm quantum device

Over time since it's inception, it's gone offline due to hosting changes. When this happens, people will reach out to Rez to let him know they miss their friend, the hmm. There has been ONE mass update as of 2025. Done by hand because the original build used HippoUpdate. It now uses a local update service.

Common Questions:

Q: Is this thing listening to me?
A: No. There are zero script listens in this device. Everthing is coincidence.

Q: Is there AI in this? A: No. All of it predates AI. Some lines are post-ai but still human-made.

Q: Is this actually 'quantum' or does it emulate a real quantum discriminator?
A: No. It pulls random lines from a web database. Emulating a real quantum device in lsl / php on AWS could potentially break the universe.

Q: What even is this?
A: A long, long time ago. Rez was going on a vacation. And made a silly thing that said his catch phrase. 'hmm.' And now it's a little talking floaty thing. It's his longest running, most successful project. People ping Rez when it stopped talking more than they tell when paid-for services break.

Q: What if the host goes down. A: It won't be the first time. It won't be the last time.

Q: This thing seems to have... lore? A: Yes. There is only one hmm but it's exists in multiple instances across it's timeline in our reality. It is timeless, and for some reason you have one on your coffee table. It will tell you about itself if you let it.
